THE GREEN FLAG OF HOPE
Cristina Drios

In “ARGVS”, ten sentimental melopeias, sometimes times gentle and at other times tragic, and two of which are traditional, very old and profound, magnificently echo the ambience of Homer’s “Odyssey” which, as a poem, is already music – pause and sound. The strumming of Luisa Amaro’s Portuguese guitar, combined with the bass clarinet, piano and vocals takes us on a journey with Ulysses in the green Mediterranean to escape the enchantments of Circe, the desire of the Mermaids, the tragic prophecies of Tiresias and the famous blind clairvoyant of Athens, ever anxious to return to the arms of his beloved wife Penelope and to the affection of his faithful dog Argus who waited for him for years on end, wrapped in the green flag of hope for his return.
In“ARGVS”, the music is an optimistic green like the green of the sea of antiquity, a green that was green, blue and black in a single word, the green of this heavy sea buffeted by the winds of the meltemi, and also black like the sharp rocks of certain islands and like the dark destiny that awaits us all once we have fulfilled our destiny, like the faithful dog of Ulysses.
In “ARGVS”, we hear the crashing of waves surging in the words of the poet, Constantino Kavafis, we hear the gentleness of a lullaby or the beauty of a traditional Cypriot song (“Triantafilleni”, beautiful as a rose) sung by the magical voice of Kyriacoula Constantinou; and thus, surviving all of the enchantments and all of the prophecies of the long journey undertaken, the metaphor for our own, like Ulysses, somewhere someone who loves us and who we love is waiting for us, to make the end worth all the torment.
