ARGONAUT OF THE MAGIC OF SOUND
José Jorge Letria

Luisa Amaro’s  Argvs confirms and deepens the maturity of her musical journey with a harmonious and innovative combination of her work as composer and instrumentalist. this new project is a moment of great sensitivity and good taste in contemporary portuguese music, created by the imaginative melodies and refined interpretation of its 10 tracks.
Luisa Amaro has gone her own way since her time as instrumentalist in the musical world of carlos paredes, on a path which has been gaining recognition for its rigour, creativity and constant quest to find new sounds in the portuguese guitar.
in Argvs, Luisa Amaro is supported instrumentally by Gonçalo Lopes on clarinet, Enrico Bindocci on piano and Kyriacoula Constantinou on vocals. her new cd emphasises both her solid portuguese roots and universalist calling, oscillating between sounds whose origins we can immediately identify and others whose very titles take us to other places, ambiences and references in the mythological heritage of an antiquity which has been essential to the identity of our civilisation. the voice of Kyriacoula Constantinou, with its deep, magical quality, reinforces this identity in which we lose and then find ourselves again from track to track and from melody to melody.
the calm style of Luisa Amaro never succumbs to the temptation of exuberance and emphasises the independent path she has followed compared to the brilliant and original path of carlos paredes, which was her point of departure for this long journey. this journey, with its mythological references, has come a very long way from our roots to the ever-challenging paths of a modernity which faces the questions and uncertainties of this global world where what is national and what is local is steadily and ominously fading away and losing its form.
let us be the argonauts embarking on Argvs, trusting in the sure hands of a helmsman who makes the portuguese guitar a bridge of sound and memory between the past and the future, and between near and far, without boundaries or fantasies. Argvs takes us jubilantly from track to track until the odyssey of its creator is completed.
