A RETURN TO ITHACA
Adalberto Alves

This could well have been the title of this new work by Luisa Amaro, but in fact it is called Argos, the name of a demigod and of a city in the delightful ancient Hellenic language.
Luisa’s music is like a carpet woven with nostalgia from the heart of the age of
the Mare Nostrum, that Mediterraneum which formed the poetic and musical matrix for Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Jews.
The vocals, together with the wind and string instruments of this CD, sing of the impossible lost lands that Homer invoked like no other when he grieved for the Greek heroes who had died young in battle. Ulysses (Odysseus) took ten years to return to the arms of Penelope and to the protection of her constancy, and ten is the number of songs which trace the melodic route of a compelling adventure of immortal myths.
This work makes the Mediterranean the living memory of the hazards of life that torment people as well as the snares of Circe, the sorceress, or the prophecies of Tiresias, the Greek, who was blind and spoke wisely but spiritually.
Luisa Amaro has made the enchantment powerful by calling not only on the words of the great Alexandrian Kaváfis, but also the telluric voice of Kyriacoula and the accompaniment of exceptional instrumentalists. Luisa shows her best form as a musical interpreter in this work and, in the wake of Carlos Paredes, endows the guitar with the status of the solo instrument that she exemplifies so well. Though it is impossible not to be very impressed by the maturity of all of the pieces (with the exception of the traditional “Triantafylleni”, which is a traditional Cypriot song) have been composed by Luisa Amaro for this Argvs.
While Argos is in Greece, Lisbon (Olissipone, the city of Ulysses) is the western-most point of the Mediterranean, not geographically, but in terms of myth and civilisation - this sea-nation that Luisa Amaro loves on behalf of us all and which is yet to be discovered by the North of Europe.
